Android Tablet The Zeen from HP -- that gianormus company that bought Palm and still felt a need to bring us an Android device. Turns out it really does ship with the Zeus printer bundle, and it brings a very different Android than we're used to.
On the tablet side, it’s a 7″ touchscreen device running Android 2.1 as its core OS, but the interface is supposedly locked in as HP’s Touchsmart UI. Nothing wrong with Touchsmart, but Android apps probably won’t run on it nor is it known what Android goodies will be baked in. It will offer web browsing and e-reading via the Barnes & Noble eBook system, presumably for the express purpose of printing reading material via custom apps. Sounds pretty limited.
HP's calling it their TouchSmart UI, and it looks like it may be a simplified and functional desktop style arrangement instead of the standard homescreen and dynamic content system we're used to.
Now that we have that squared away, it looks like there could be hope for HP's Android-powered slate yet -- reports are starting to roll in of a long awaited Android 2.2 update for the Zeen. For months, owners of the tablet have filled HP customer service forums with complaints about the promised, but never delivered update, but as you can see from the video below, Zeen owners can now download a beta version of Froyo complete with Flash-compatibility, and from what we've heard, it's a huge improvement.
Bundled with its partner printer, the Photosmart eStation C510 (its official name) is priced at $399 and is schedule to ship in a couple of weeks. Supposedly it will also be offered separately but there’s no word on that.
